1301 and 1305 Pleasant Street –
Fab for Less 2006

These homes were designed as a volunteer effort for Southeast Neighborhood Development (SEND) for their Fab for Less 2006 home tour. The theme was “Go Green for Less Green” with the goal being to create energy efficient, healthy and resource efficient homes within an average home owner’s budget.

The 1301 house was new construction built on a vacant lot adjacent to 1305, which was originally constructed in 1875. The original 1305 Pleasant house was 675 square feet and it was determined that we would add support and sleeping spaces on the south, behind the existing structure. The 1301 house sits adjacent a large residence consistent with homes built in the early 20th century. As a result, the home is two stories in height.

Each home comprises about 1400 square feet, the smaller plans using less material and energy in their basic layouts, but seeking comfortable, open spaces through clever design strategies. Since the home’s main facades face north and the southern elevations were largely unencumbered by trees, the opportunity to use simple passive solar was a foregone conclusion.

The homes were open to the public on 25 and 26 August, 2006. After the tours, the homes were sold and are now part of the housing stock in the Fountain Square neighborhood.
